Who Are You And Are You Ready For
Enlightenment?
A
fundamental question of existence is: Who Am I? What are my beliefs? What
is it that I do? What do I
say that reflects who I am? What
actions do I take that tell others about my existence? All of these questions are questions that attempt to identify
who I am. Some people identify who they are by the religion that they
belong to as a member. Others might identify with the job that he holds.
Another person might identify herself as a mother, a sister, a daughter,
etc.
Yet, is it
really true that you are any of these things? Are you really the beliefs that you hold? Are you really the
job that you do, the person in a particular relationship, the religion
that you belong to? Well,
you might say: I’m not all of that (whatever “that” is); but I am
part of that.
Are you?
Are you even a part of any one thing that you identify with? Can
you truly know who you are if you don’t have anything at all with
which you can identify?
The
Path of Enlightenment
This is a
very probing question. If
you take up the question of who you really are, you are entering into an
area that could result in your death. Everything that you have ever
attached to and held dear to your existence could be shattered into a
million pieces. In Buddhism, this is
called ‘enlightenment.’
It is known to be the death of your ego. Some of you may say:
“Whoops...better not go there.” For some that is true. It is better to continue living with
the beliefs that you have to support your existence. Yet, for many
people, life has an element of suffering that is experienced as a
constant or underlying hurt.
Suffering
or Enlightenment?
Suffering
is a part of life that challenges us to grow beyond who we have thought
ourselves to be. One day, you wake up and you decide that you don’t
want to hurt and suffer any more.
This is the first step towards enlightenment. Enlightenment is freedom from holding onto your beliefs, your
ideas, your patterns and your feelings.
Enlightenment is peace. Being
in a state of enlightenment allows you to live every moment fully and
joyfully. When you wake up
and you say, “I no longer choose to live in suffering and pain,” you
are choosing to dis-identify with everything that you have ever attached
to that you believed was you. When
you take this first step, you are choosing a new path that will take you
to joy and freedom!
